A recent modification to Meta's developer tools is affecting third-party consumer apps that previously integrated with Instagram. Among the impacted platforms are Match Group's dating apps, Tinder and Hinge, which allowed users to link their Instagram profiles to showcase posts to potential matches.
The journaling app Day One, acquired by Automattic (the owner of WordPress.com) in 2021, is also losing a significant feature due to this change. The company announced that it will no longer be able to import users’ Instagram photos and posts into journals. This shift is a result of Meta's decision to limit developers’ programmatic access to Instagram data.
Meta had previously revealed plans to disable the Instagram Basic Display API as of December 4, 2024. This API allowed third-party apps to connect to Instagram accounts and access content like profiles, photos, videos, and albums. Developers were advised to transition to the Instagram API, but this newer API only supports business accounts and lacks the functionality needed for personal account integrations, such as those used by Day One.
Consequently, Day One users will no longer be able to automatically import Instagram content into their journals. However, any journal entries previously created with Instagram photos will remain accessible. This feature had been a major draw for Day One’s Premium subscription, priced at $34.99 per year.
Acknowledging the change, Day One addressed users in a blog post, expressing regret over the discontinuation. "We understand this news is disappointing. The Instagram integration was a cherished feature that helped users bring memories into their journals. We know many relied on it, and it was a favorite among our team as well," the post stated.
Other services affected by the API shutdown include Discord, which had earlier removed its Instagram connection due to the lack of support, as well as tools like Spotlight and SnapWidget that embed Instagram posts on websites. These platforms are now recommending users switch to business accounts to retain some functionality.
